Letter from the Head

"Welcome to Illinois!" "Welcome to DURP!"

Everyone in the Department community and so many others in Urbana-Champaign have greeted me warmly since I moved here in summer 2018 to become the department head. After eight years in Washington, DC, managing a housing and community development research unit at the Urban Institute, it's great to be welcomed back in academia.

These are also greetings I now have the pleasure and good fortune to extend to you.

If you're considering DURP's four programs - BAUSP, MUP, MSSUM, and Ph.D.: Welcome! You'll be received with enthusiasm from our current students, alumni, faculty, and operations team. We value your interest and hope you'll apply.

If you're one of our incoming students from all over the world: You are welcome here, and you'll see it even before you apply. You'll enter a department that reinforces community, with institutions like the Student Planning Organization, Planners' Network, and Doctoral Students in Urban Planning.

Ongoing students: Welcome! Come see me, or write me. And thank you - because you're the ones who are most active in building and maintaining the community that makes it so natural to say, Welcome.

People from other parts of the University of Illinois, and from the broader Champaign-Urbana community: Welcome to our classes, our research presentations and projects, and our programs! We cross disciplinary boundaries to address some of the most urgent challenges we face, from environmental threats, to social injustice, to persistent economic distress.

Alumni of DURP: Welcome back! Please let me know how you are and what you're doing. And come back for a visit.

Current, past, and prospective employers of DURP's current students and alumni: Welcome! Share information about your available jobs and internships, and let me know your thoughts about how DURP is doing in educating the people you've hired.
