Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning

The Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning prepares students to tackle some of the most significant challenges facing cities and regions. Students are taught the conceptual frameworks, critical thinking skills, and practical tools and techniques needed to address issues of physical planning and urban design in human settlements jointly with social, economic and civic concerns. The BAUP is excellent preparation for students interested in careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, public administration, and public policy, and it is great foundation for graduate study in law, business administration, and the social sciences.

Master of Urban Planning

The Master of Urban Planning is the primary degree for those seeking a career as a professional planner. This two year degree prepares students for leadership in urban and regional planning in the areas of transportation, land use and sustainable design, local and regional economic development, community development, and planning information systems. DURP also offers dual degree programs with Law and Architecture, as well as international programs with project and study opportunities in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

Doctor of Philosophy in Regional Planning

Students earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Regional Planning develop the research skills to contribute new knowledge in the economic, environmental, physical, and social aspects of planning. DURP graduates hold faculty positions in major universities in the United States, Canada, Indonesia, Korea, and Taiwan, and work for the World Bank, the InterAmerican Development Bank, and other federal and state government agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The 25-30 PhD students in residence take advantage of incredible resources of the University, the comfortable and affordable living conditions in Champaign-Urbana, and the opportunity to work with and teach the 50 students in our Master of Urban Planning program and the 110 students in our Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning program.
