The College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

We seek an energetic Department Head with intellectual leadership and a vision for planning education, scholarship, and practice. The Head reports to the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and oversees the administration of courses, budget, and personnel policy in collaboration with department faculty and staff subject to College and University policies. The Head must demonstrate effective communication skills and ability to represent the department's programs to the university, the general public, and the profession and to participate in development and fundraising.

The department offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees and is recognized for its interdisciplinary approach and leadership in community development for social justice, geographic information system and planning analysis, sustainable development, economic development, transnational planning, and land use and transportation. The department and its diverse faculty are committed to the profession and to research that advances the practice of planning. Both the bachelors and masters degree programs are accredited by Planning Accreditation Board (PAB). The Department currently has 15 permanent faculty members, eight lecturers and adjunct faculty members, 105 students in the BAUP program, 55 students in the MUP program, and 27 PhD students.

Qualifications: A doctoral degree in Urban Planning or closely related field is required. PhD in (Urban) Planning and professional experience are preferred. The successful candidate will have an established record of teaching, research, and service and have scholarly achievement sufficient to gain appointment as a full professor with tenure. Experience in academic administration and budgeting and qualification for membership in AICP are desirable. A commitment to collegial decision-making, shared governance, and diversity in faculty and students is expected.

The department is one of seven academic units of a college that includes the performing, visual, and environmental design arts. The department is on the flagship campus of the University of Illinois with an enrollment of 42,000 students. Department faculty are affiliated with the campus-wide Action Research.Illinois, the Regional Economic Applications Lab, and the Land Use Evolution and Impact Assessment Modeling Lab. The University of Illinois was first in the nation to appoint a planning faculty and has been offering courses in planning for almost 100 years. The University Library has the largest collection of any public university in the country with over 10 million volumes, and includes a city planning collection, established in 1913, that is one of the oldest and largest collections of its kind.

The salary for this full-time position is commensurate with experience; the proposed start date is 16 August 2012 (negotiable). This appointment will be a full time (100%), nine month position with the likelihood of two months in the summer.
