Lab Policies
- No food or drink in the computer labs please!
- Please DO NOT prop the lab doors open when they have been locked. The doors are unlocked each weekday from the hours of 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. Holding the door open for an extended period when it is locked damages the electronic lock mechanism. It is also a security hazard to the computing equipment and to you, especially at night.
- The T: drive is intended to facilitate moving files between other drives (e.g., between flash drives). It is not a permanent storage drive. Each Monday, all files and directories on the T: drive that have not been accessed within the last week are deleted.
- Remember to back up your important data; one copy is not enough. Also: Save early and often!
- Please delete any unnecessary files from your G: drive and from Urban-Courses group folders as you work. This helps us conserve server space.

Help for New Students
CITES (Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services has designed a tutorial that gives new students an overview of several CITES services. CITES provides many information technology services across campus, including email accounts, wired and wireless networking, personal web space, Internet access, software resources, and several computer labs.
For a complete guide, see the CITES New Student Tutorial page.
NetIDs, Usernames, Logins & Passwords
There are at least three different ID and password systems that you will be using in this Department. The login names that you use are the same for all of the systems, but the passwords can be different. That is, NetID = Username = Login name, and these you cannot change. However, passwords may be changed as often as you like. Thus you may choose different passwords for each system or you can make them all the same. For security reasons it is preferred that you set different passwords for the different systems. Information about campus password issues is available here. Note that when you change one of the following passwords, it has no effect on the others.
WebMail/E-mail Server
This is the server that you will use for e-mail. The Login is your NetID. You must create the password before you login for the first time. Go here and use your NetIDand NetID password to log in and create your e-mail password. See the links on the page for tips on how to create a password that will be accepted by the system. Note that your e-mail address is: NetID@uiuc.edu.
Department LAN (Local Area Network)
This is the Department's local system of networked computers which you will be using for class work. The lab computers currently have Microsoft Windows XP installed and require a username and password to use. The username is the same as your NetID and the password is your Active Directory (AD) password. If you haven't set your AD password before, go to the AD page and choose Reset Password at http://accounts.ad.uiuc.edu.
Logging On
With the computer and monitor on, a window should be present on the screen telling you to "Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to log on." Press these three keys simultaneously to get the login dialog box.
Enter your Network ID in the Username field. (Your Network ID is on your student ID card if you forget it). Using the tab key or the mouse, move to the Password field. Don't use the Enter key to switch fields, since this automatically submits whatever you have entered. Use your Active Directory (AD) password. Once you have entered both your Username and Password, press Enter or click on OK with the mouse. (The DOMAIN field should say UIUC.) You are now logged in!
Caution! Never let anyone see your password! If you think others have seen your password then change it!
Account Security/Logging Off
Be aware of your computer account's security. Do not remain logged in if you are going to be away from the computer for a long period of time and always remember to log off the computer when you are finished.
Card Access to Building & Labs
The west outside door of Temple Buell Hall and the computer labs have a Card Access System reader for entrance after regular hours and weekends. Your student ID card, or I-card is, used for this purpose. The card is swiped down the scanner which reads the magnetic stripe on the back. Cards vary greatly in their magnetic strength, some needing only a quick swipe while others require a much slower swipe through the reader. When two green lights light up, you may enter. If you get a red light, then your ID has not been entered in the door access database. If the lights don't change when you swipe your card, then you need to swipe it again more slowly until there is some reaction. Occasionally cards cease to work as their magnetic stripe loses its strength and a new card must then be obtained.
A record of who has entered and at what time they entered is maintained in a computer log so that we can keep track of persons entering the building and labs after hours. The labs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but it is extremely important that you help maintain building and lab security at all times. Do not prop open any doors to allow others to by-pass the security measures.
