Using the DURP Network

The Department's lab and network is designed to facilitate both individual and team project work. You may save your files on the G: drive's "My Documents" folder on Urban-server1, or on your personal media such as a USB flash drive, a CD or even a DVD. To share files for group projects, you may create your own team folder inside the urban-courses folder on Urban-server9. Or, you can store your files on the University's Netfiles system, then create a ticket and send it to people with whom you want to share the files.

Available Drives

Several drives are accessible from the lab computers. Some are network drives that become available when you log in. You have personal space on the G: drive and you may use the T: drive to transfer files between media or people.

Drives Available on the Lab Computers
Drive Description
A: This is the 3.5 inch floppy drive on the computer.
C: This is the personal computer's hard drive used for software programs and Windows operating system software. Never attempt to save anything to the C: drive; all files found will be erased.
G: This is the USERS network drive. Each student has personal space (maximum of 2 gigabytes) on the server which can only be accessed by that user.
T: This is the TRANSFER drive. Everyone has access to this drive and it is used to store files so that people can access them over the network. Use the drive for temporary storage or transferring files since all documents on the T: Drive are deleted every Monday.
Z: The personal computer's CD-ROM drive.

VPN, or Virtual Private Network

For users of off-campus wired networks, the VPN system provides an on-campus identity that is essential for access to some University resources. For users of off-campus wireless networks, including in local coffeehouses and bookstores, using the VPN system provides wired-equivalent security as well as an on-campus identity. In short, you can get connected to the lab's resources such as Urban-server9 when you are off-campus.

To do so, simply follow the following steps:

  • Install the VPN software and its profiles from the CITES VPN homepage.
  • Open the VPN software and choose the option "connect from off-campus." Type in your NetID and your NetID Password when the authentication dialoge is prompted.
  • Go to the Start Menu and click Run.
  • Type in: "//Urban-server9" and click OK.
  • Type in your NetID and your Active Directory Password.

For more information, check CITES' VPN Quick Start guide.

Accessing Wireless

Wireless network access via UIUCnet is available in many places throughout campus. See the following websites for information on wireless locations across the whole campus and inside Temple Buell Hall. You will need a wireless device that is compatible with either the 802.11b, 802.11a, or 802.11g wireless networking standards. 802.11b coverage is available in most wireless areas, with the higher-speed options available in a few locations as well. Bluetooth and other wireless standards are not supported on UIUCnet Wireless at present.

To use UIUCnet, do the following:

  • Identification: Once your laptop detects the wireless signal, log in to UIUCnet through a web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Mozilla) or a VPN client.
  • Use your Network ID or a valid guest account to sign on.

See CITES VPN and Wireless FAQs for additional information.
