Public Lecture: Building the Just City: The Unfulfilled Promise of American City Planning and Design by Ken Reardon (Venue:
Plym Auditorium, Temple Buell Hall)
This spring, members of the American Planning Association will gather in Las Vegas, Nevada to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the urban planning profession in the United States. While the social movement of civic-minded citizens, settlement house workers, clergy, architects, landscape architects, and elected officials that led to the establishment of the urban planning profession has made significant contributions toward improving the quality of urban life at home and abroad, the promise of building the just city and region has yet to be realized. This lecture will explore the contributions that professional education programs in planning and design at land grant institutions, such as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, can make towards building the just city and region by combining Patrick Geddes' ideal of the university militant and Ernest Boyer's notion of the scholarship of engagement.
