Writing Workshop for New Scholars

August 8-9, 2008 The editors of the Journal of Planning Education and Research (JPER) will present a workshop on scholarly publication this summer. The editors' goal is to improve the quality of written scholarship among new faculty of planning and related academic programs. The workshop is intended for recent Ph.D. recipients (or candidates close to completion) in urban planning, urban studies, and closely related fields. Untenured assistant professors also are eligible to participate.
The JPER Writing Workshop for New Scholars is scheduled for August 8-9, 2008, at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. The program will include sessions on the writing and publication process, with intensive small-group work on participants' own manuscripts. The sponsoring co-editors of JPER are Weiping Wu and Michael Brooks. Other faculty will include Christopher Silver and Louise Dunlap.
Applications are due by May 1, 2008. Submit the following materials electronically to jper.editors@gmail.com (preferably in a single file):
- Cover letter stating research interests and scholarly goals;
- Summary (500 words maximum) of an article-length paper that will be due by June 1, 2008;
- Current curriculum vitae;
- Brief letter of recommendation from a department chair or dissertation advisor.
Applicants who have been accepted for the workshop will be notified by mid-May. There is no registration fee for participants; accommodations (for August 7 and 8) and meals will be provided at a VCU residence hall, conveniently located near the workshop. Participants will be responsible for their own travel costs and must arrive at the workshop venue by the evening of August 7. The workshop will end in the mid-afternoon of August 9.
